Right now, Volvo only sells two plug-in hybrid models—soon to be four—and no all-electric cars.
But within a decade, it hopes to become one of the biggest sellers of plug-in electric vehicles.
The Swedish carmaker has just set itself the goal of selling a total of 1 million hybrids and electric cars by 2025.

Volvo says it will achieve that goal by offering two hybrid versions of every model, as well as releasing an all-electric car in 2019.
The 1-million-car target will include sales of such cars all the way back to 2012, a Volvo spokesperson told Automotive News.
The company delivered 503,127 vehicles of all kinds last year, and said in October that it expects hybrids and electric cars to make up 10 percent of its global sales by 2020.
2016 Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid
Volvo already offers the T8 “Twin Engine” plug-in hybrid powertrain in the XC90 crossover, and will soon offer it in the upcoming S90 sedan and V90 wagon.
All three models are based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that will eventually underpin new versions of the S60 sedan, V60 wagon, and XC60 crossover as well.
Volvo also currently sells a V60 plug-in hybrid wagon in Europe that uses a diesel through-the-road setup.

All three “60” models will get plug-in hybrid powertrain options as part of their upcoming redesigns.
Volvo is also developing a Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform for smaller cars, though it remains unclear if any of those models will make it to North America.
The two platforms combined will underpin virtually all Volvo cars for the foreseeable future, and both were designed to incorporate electrified powertrains from the start.
2017 Volvo S90
Volvo even plans to offer sporty plug-in hybrids through the Polestar performance division it acquired last year.
The sales goal is one of several initiatives being undertaken by Volvo to establish what it considers more responsible business practices.

Volvo hopes to achieve “climate-neutral” operations by 2025, and put women in 35 percent of its high-level positions by 2020.
It also wants to ensure that no one is killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by that same year, a goal it plans to reach by relying on autonomous-driving technology.
